Renovation Project 2016: Part 10

Moving right along with this project. We are feeling like it is time to clean up the rooms and get started installing the floors!! Yay!!! I am ready to see that happen. I have all of the baseboards in the house painted (two coats) except for the bathrooms, as I have not yet touched those two rooms. They are not of as much of a big concern because they have tiled floors that will just be cleaned up and kept.

So, we have been working on clearing out the bedrooms and the living room, and have been sweeping up any debris and using the shop vac too. With all projects it seems that the workplace gets cluttered with tools and just so much stuff! It felt good to get a little bit organized and get some cleaning done. I like things clean, and it helps me stay focused.

On February 16, 2016, we were so excited to lay down our first pieces of flooring. After a long deliberation on which place to start, we decided to start in the third bedroom. I had some very happy moments at this point in the picture above. So pleased with the way the paint and floor looked together. We had picked out 7.6-in W x 4.23-ft L Tavern Oak Embossed Laminate Wood Planks from Lowe’s, and we were anxious to get it on the floor. It had arrived at the house around the 13th and had time to get acclimated to the temperatures. There were many hours spent looking at all of the flooring choices at both Lowe’s and Home Depot, plus we checked out online stores with locations near us. We found that this flooring was a reasonable price and had a lot of great reviews. We purchased it for about $.80/square foot. Yes! That sounded great to me. Also, after searching and reading, we chose to use Pergo GOLD 100-sq ft Premium 3mm Flooring Underlayment. One thing for everything, and we liked the thickness of the padding, as it would be great under our feet and help to keep from making squeaking sounds while walking on it. Also, it is has a nice, thick barrier from the cement that will keep out the cold and moisture. So nice! I am very pleased with it so far. Oh, and I forgot to mention that the installation of it is so simple!

I wanted to note too that we made another purchase that has been brilliant so far! We bought a new saw (SKIL 3601-02 – 7 Amp Flooring Saw), and I feel that this is a must-have for cutting laminate flooring. Just be sure to wear goggles and masks when cutting. And, be sure the area is well ventilated too. The flooring is pretty stinky when being cut and gives off a lot of wood shavings. 🙂

The next day we did a little bit of work and then headed to have some fun at Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament, and that was a real treat after spending so many hours working on the project. We had a blast sitting back and enjoying a great meal and show!! You can read about our time at Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament here.
