I am starting off this article by saying that my husband has a medical condition that he occasionally needs to travel out of town to see doctors. This is the first time that I have written about this very personal issue (and I hope to share more in the future with all of you). It is tough for me to talk about this subject with others. I have wanted to give him his privacy, but he has mentioned that by talking about it openly, it might help someone else! So true! He has a neurological disorder that affects his daily life, and he has been in search of answers for his illness for about 6 years. It is very complicated, and he needs to visit with doctors that are at teaching hospitals or university hospitals. It is so very hard to see him going through all of this. My husband is my best friend, and I am always in awe of his positivity and wanting to search out the answers so that he can get the right treatment. While the appointments are not-so-fun, we try to make the most of our time together as a family.
In fact, we just returned from a visit to the Palm Beach Gardens area in Florida. I had packed a small bag, grabbed some snacks for the road, and we set out for a quick trip (a little more than 24 hours) on the afternoon a day before my husband’s scheduled appointment. We woke up the next morning with a call saying that the doctor was sick, and we would have to reschedule! UGH! Traveling is difficult for my sweetie for many reasons, and we were really disappointed when we learned that we had traveled this great distance (about a 3 1/2 hour drive) and were not be able to see the doctor. But, we quickly turned it around and talked about the fun time we had together the night before and then headed back home. 🙂
Below is a list that I have compiled of 5 things that we have found are fun to do when we have quick trips out of town for doctor appointments. I REALLY wish my husband didn’t have to go to these doctor visits at all, but at least we have been able to make some nice memories together.
1. Eating out
My family and I are always so busy, that even if we do eat out while at home, it is usually quick service restaurants or we get it to-go. So, when we have a little more time together, it is nice to have a sit-down meal out. Somewhere that we haven’t eaten in a long time is preferably our pick, or a restaurant that is local to the area is also fun. Plus, it is nice for me to not have to make a meal and do dishes. 🙂
2. Pajama party
When we are all together in one space, it is fun to spend time at night catching a movie together, eating snacks and chatting about our day.
Most hotels have a pool, and it is a great time to get out of the room and get some exercise.
4. Try something new
Heading to a destination that you may not have ever visited before is a good chance to find something new to see and do. Maybe your family likes going to museums, or you could watch a movie at a theater you have never been to before, watch a sporting event, shopping and so much more. In the case of this last trip we just took, my husband, son and I walked on the beach. The ocean is one place where we can just unwind and relax. My son is not a huge fan of any body of water, but my husband and I could live at the beach, for sure!! And, for me, if you added mountains to that, it would be perfect! 🙂
I truly love taking pictures. Setting out to travel a different path and stopping to snap photos is so much fun for me. With this doctor visit being so close to the Atlantic Ocean, that was an excellent opportunity for me to use my camera! Really wonderful!
