Universe Of Energy & The Great Movie Ride Have Closed At Walt Disney World Resort

Universe of Energy at Epcot and The Great Movie Ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World Resort have closed their doors. Both had their last days of operation on Sunday, August 13, 2017. Did you get a chance to visit one last time? I am a little bit sad, but also really excited to see the new attractions coming to those locations. Saying goodbye to things that brought such fond memories is hard. But, I know we will enjoy what is to come! 🙂

What I will miss about the Universe of Energy

The Universe of Energy was a pavilion located in the eastern half of Future World in Epcot. The pavilion opened on October 1, 1982, which was the official opening date for Epcot as well. Ellen’s Energy Adventure was the only attraction in this pavilion, and the second in the park’s history in that location. We always called it the “Ellen ride.” My family and I enjoyed this ride with our son when he was little, more so than when he got older. The slow movement of the attraction, that is was mostly dark and you were out of the heat for about 45 minutes, was an appeal. It always seemed to make me sleepy, and it was a good time to get in a quick nap. 🙂

One great thing about it was the fact that you didn’t have to wait that long for the ride. You could sit in a nice, cool entry area waiting for Ellen DeGeneres to play Jeopardy in her dreams and then hop on the large battery-powered traveling theater cars. Ellen and Bill Nye (The Science Guy) entertained everyone, and really taught us a lot about energy. The animatronic dinosaurs in the prehistoric forest was the highlight for me, and this was our son’s favorite part too, as he loved dinosaurs. I will not miss that loud dinosaur roar at the end of the ride though! Hehehe! Thanks for the memories, Universe of Energy!

Replacing the Universe of Energy is a Guardians of the Galaxy attraction, and you can read about that at my other site.

The Great Movie Ride at Disney's Hollywood Studios

Goodbye to The Great Movie Ride

My son always asked to go on The Great Movie Ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. I liked that the wait times were not very long for this attraction, if you didn’t have a FastPass+ for it. My favorite part of this ride was probably the Mary Poppins area and The Wizard of Oz. My son can do a great impression of the munchkin’s faces. Fun! And, I always left that ride with the tune of “ding, dong the witch is dead.” 🙂

A new ride called Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway (read about it at my other site) will be replacing this attraction.

Universe of Energy & The Great Movie Ride at Walt Disney World Resort

We have made so many memories from both of these attractions at Walt Disney World Resort. It does bring a little tear to my eye that they are now gone. As a family, we always bring up lines and quotes from the rides at the parks. One from this ride goes something like this, “My name is…, and I will be your guide during this magical journey into the movies. It’s the perfect job for me, because I love movies.” A line that is memorable from Ellen’s Energy Adventure is Ellen saying, “Cool! I mean, hot. I mean, coolly-hot. Or hotly-cool!” She’s so funny!

We had a chance to ride both of these attractions one last time over the last few months. Good times!! What are your thoughts about these rides? Will you miss them? Let me know in the comment section below. Thanks so much for reading! 🙂

P.S. See 5 fun things to do at the 2017 Epcot International Food & Wine Festival. It begins at the end of this month!
